If you suspect that you or your child may have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), follow these steps to navigate the process effectively:
1. Consult Your General Practitioner (GP)Schedule an Appointment:
Book an appointment with your family GP as they will serve as your initial point of contact for a diagnosis.
2. Prepare for the Visit:
Before the appointment, gather relevant information about symptoms such as difficulties with concentration, impulsivity, hyperactivity, challenges in completing tasks, misplacing items, zoning out, and school/work anxiety.
3. Discuss Symptoms Openly:
Clearly express your concerns and describe specific behaviours suggesting ADHD. Discuss any strategies to manage waiting times for diagnosis.
4. Request a Referral:
If a referral is not suggested, politely insist on seeing a specialist by saying,
"I appreciate your insights, but I would like to pursue further evaluation with a specialist."
5. Express Gratitude:
Regardless of your GP’s initial assessment, thank them for their time and insights to maintain a positive relationship.
For Adults
Document Your History:
Write down personal history related to attention issues, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity at various life stages.
Gather Supporting Information:
Collect feedback from family members or close friends and include old school reports or parent questionnaires if available.
For Children
Collect Observations from Teachers:
Ask teachers or caregivers for observations about your child’s behaviour in school and social settings.
Keep a Behaviour Diary:
Record specific instances of attention difficulties or impulsive behaviours over several weeks.
Attend the Assessment
Be prepared for various assessments, which may include questionnaires, interviews, and behavioural evaluations conducted by specialists.
Follow Up After Diagnosis
If diagnosed with ADHD, discuss treatment options with a specialist, which may involve therapy, medication management, and personalised coping strategies.
